The Society for Location Analysis

The Census 2001 - What we might expect!

Twenty five members of the Society for Location Analysis met at FPDSavills central
London office on 15th May 2003 to explore and discuss the 2001 Census and what we
might expect. Discussions and networking continued into the evening, whilst members
enjoyed the sumptuous spread of food and refreshments laid on by FPDSavills. The Society
would like to extend a big thank you to FPDSavills for their hospitality.

The Census 2001 will be a key data source for Retail Location and the arrival of the new
Census output is an eagerly awaited event.

Delegates included: Abbey National, B&Q, Benfield Greig, Birkbeck College, Demographic
Decisions, DTZ, FPDSavills, King Sturge, Marks & Spencer, McDonalds, ONS, Post Office,
Thomas Cook, TMC, Whitbread, Woolwich and Woolworths.

We were very fortunate to have secured Chris Denham, Head of Census Output and Geography
of the Office of National Statistics and Keith Dugmore of Demographic Decisions. Peter Sleight,
our Chairman, chaired the event. Chris's presentation discussed what the Census delivers and
Keith gave a view from the Demographic User Group.

Chris Denham has been the key interface between the Census Offices and users for the past
twenty-plus years, and knows more about the needs of the commercial sector than anyone else
in ONS Census Division. Chris has said that he will be pleased to take questions on the night.
This was a rare opportunity for Society members to quiz the man behind the Census Access project.

Keith set up the Demographic User Group ( DUG ), which represents the views of fifteen major
users of demographic and associated data, a number of which are at the leading edge of store
location analysis. Before setting up Demographic Decisions, Keith had experience of the Census
first as a user, and subsequently as a provider at a major Census agency.
