The Theme

The theme was the 2011 Census (which will have taken place on 27th March).

Our speakers were two acknowledged experts on the Census:

Thanks to our brilliant speakers and all the members and visitors for the Society for Property Researchers who also joined us, with almost 40 delegates it was a very well attended event.

Speaker biographies

Joe Traynor, Head of Output Design for the 2011 Census, Office for National Statistics

Joe Traynor has worked for the Office for National Statistics for over ten years at both the London and Titchfield offices, and has had responsibility for producing and disseminating some of the key outputs for ONS including key economic and labour market indicators. His current role as Head of Output Design for the 2011 Census means he is responsible for overseeing all matters relating to the specification of the 2011 Census outputs.

Joe has primarily worked on large scale social surveys at the ONS including; the General Household Survey; Labour Force Survey and Annual Populations Survey. As a result he has extensive knowledge in the production and dissemination outputs gathered from large scale data sources.

Keith Dugmore, Director, Demographic Decisions

Keith advises on the use of demographic and geographic information to support decision-making. He set up his own company, Demographic Decisions, in 1996 to provide impartial consultancy to both commercial companies and public services. In 1998, he also established the Demographics User Group (DUG) to represent to government the interests of large commercial users of public data: you can see a list of its 15 blue chip member companies at: www.demographicsusergroup.co.uk.

Keith started his career as a statistician in 1972 in the Population Studies Section of the Greater London Council. Whilst at LAMSAC and MVA Systematica he was project manager for the SASPAC 1981 Census analysis software (which won the British Computer Society Social Benefit Award) and data products including the ED-LINE 1991 digital boundaries (which won the Association for Geographical Information Industry Award).

He also worked for the market analysis company CACI for two spells, firstly setting up its Public Services Group, and latterly as Director of its Financial Services Group.

Keith is actively involved in several professional bodies, and has also been appointed Honorary Professor at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, University College London.
